Founded in 2023, we are part of the National AMBUCS organization that provides adaptive, therapeutic tricycles to children.
We exist to inspire mobility and independence in the Greater Knoxville area by providing adaptive, therapeutic tricycles to children who may no be able to ride a traditional bicycle.
We were founded by several pediatric physical and occupational therapists who are passionate about serving the children in their community.
Rocky Top Trykes is the Knoxville Chapter of the larger non-profit organization, AMBUCs. This national organization seeks to inspire mobility & independence through various avenues, including adaptive tricycles for veterans and children with disabilities, building ramps, and providing scholarships for students who are pursuing careers in healthcare.
Since its creation in 1922, AMBUCs has been driven to fill various needs that are not otherwise funded by the government or insurance. It relies heavily on grassroot efforts within each community to fulfill these needs, garnering the motto "Shoulders Together", which embodies the idea that great things can be accomplished when many members give small amounts of time and talents to achieve a goal.
Rocky Top Trykes' creation added to the 157 chapters that serve more than 36 states. We were founded by Physical and Occupational Therapists to specifically fill the need to provide adaptive tricycles to children within the Greater Knoxville Area, as the closest chapters previously had been in Asheville and Nashville.
Amtryke is unique because it has created a variety of adaptable tricycles to allow individuals of any ability to be successful with riding a tricycle. They have created foot trykes, hand trykes, and hand and foot trykes that come in many sizes and have additional adaptations to fit each rider's unique needs.
It is well known that physical activity can help individuals improve strength, increase bone mineral density, strengthen the cardiorespiratory system, manage weight, reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety, and decrease risk for developing health conditions.
The adaptive tricycles can be used to increase mobility, endurance, coordination, strength, and self-confidence and several pilot studies have shown improvements in functional ability after utilizing the tricycle in a therapeutic home program. Plus, they are fun and allow their riders to play with their peers and family members.
